So January is here (you aren’t the only one who has no flaming clue what day it is anymore) and now that the haze of Christmas and New Year festivities is clearing, it’s time to think about all those totally inconsiderate people that have birthdays in January and February. I’m allowed to say that because I’m one of them. I mean I’m basically working at 15.3% capacity anyway due to lack of sleep and abundance of children, so when I factor in a whole hoard of January and February birthdays, well my brain pretty much implodes. So if you are feeling pretty much the same, or worse you have a kid’s birthday to organise in the coming weeks, read on for some helpful ways to get organised.
Firstly, if you have no idea what to get, then book your friend or family member in for a birthday photoshoot. Yes I am bossy. But I can be forgiven if I’m right, right? Whether it be a cake smash, (and no 40 is not too old to get cake on your face) or a family photoshoot, there are lots of ways to give the birthday gift of some beautiful photographs. Also it involves no wrapping whatsoever.
Secondly, alarm the heck out of your calendar reminders. I don’t just mean one alarm for each birthday, I mean one the week prior, one two days before and one at the 11th hour too. Because let’s face it, January is not the month for motivation so we need all the reminding we can get. Post-it note your forehead if you have to. Or something you look at more regularly like the ceiling from all the relentless eye-rolling you do at your husband, or the back of your toddlers head, or the biscuit tin. (I am in no way advising you attach sticky notes to your children. Unless you want to. In which case I’m very okay with it.)
And thirdly, and I know you will think I’m unstable for suggesting this, write your January Birthday cards in December, when you write your Christmas cards. Yes, yes, I was temporarily horrified too, at the sheer grossness of being that organised. But. I actually gave it a try this year and people who would otherwise have had to change their birthdays to a later more convenient time, actually had them acknowledged instead. I mean, you have to sit and write out what feels like a gerzillion cards anyway - so what’s another four or five?
